Imagining the men who wore these pieces is always fun. Thinking about their struggles and problems, what they thought about and their relationships.

It's interesting how they went from really decorative, to a slightly simpler, but still beautiful design

Such intricate works of art, really. I love weapons and armor for their craftsmanship. The fact that they've lasted for such a long time is a testament to the quality and also the care that the samurai must have given them

Samurai are the most dripped out warriors in history and no one can convince me otherwise

Playing Nioh series had allowed me to learn about the huge collections of ancient armors. What their history was and where they rest now. Such beautiful history and such a cool thing to learn about. Thank you Japan!

Japanese armaments are just as beautiful as the country they were made in, each piece a work of graceful smithing and crafting. Works of art that kept men safe. Reject modernity, embrace Edo Times

Samurai armour is so cool 😎 We have heaps of completely random samurai armour in British museums as Victorian Brits loved it so much and the Japanese began mass producing it purely for wealthy Europeans to drool over

I think it would be cool if you looked at some of the Elden Ring DLC's new armor sets, especially the rakshasa armor set

All are very nice pieces but for different reasons. Context on the time period is important.

During the mid edo period is when armor smiths start to experiment and stray away from making functional pieces and start “freestyling” if you may. Trying to imitate older styles but mixing it with modern ones, and overall a big conglomeration of different elements and the armors weren’t even tailored to fit someone, just meant to be art pieces.

Early edo represents some of the best armors made in Japan as it was the pinnacle of practical development combined with a better economy due to no wars allowed smiths to create top of the line highly advanced armor of the very end of the sengoku that combined the best of regional styles into one (tosei gusoku)

Azuchi momoyama features the most variety in armor as each region had a different doctrine of fighting (but generally can be categorized to East and west) and thus many styles of armor emerged around Japan that suited different needs and kinds of warfare

I’ll stop there but Japanese armor is incredibly interesting and under looked or treated as just “pretty art” but has a rich history and incredibly practical as well. Good on you for taking the time to look around and appreciate it Robin, Cheers!
