Deaf Dog Overwhelmed by Soldier, Owner Return

Army Pvt. Hannah Foraker, 21, was reunited with her 13-year-old Golden Retriever after three months away for basic training. The golden retriever was so excited to be reunited with her owner that the dog seemed to cry.

This is why animals are so special. And why they are like children. And it is such a shame they die so young. I have been around dogs all my life as my Aunt raised small breeds. And I can remember how they would age, and some would lose sight, or most of their hearing, or other issues and somehow some way they would still get so excited when you came home for the day, or would acknowledge them. They become your best friends. I currently have a 10 year old Mixed Chihuahua/Poodle, and she is starting to show her age. Having issues with her sight, being able to jump up and down from the couch/chair/bed, and breathing, but everyday when I come home as soon as I pull the screen door open to unlock the main door she starts to yelp. And when i enter she gets so exited, tail just a waggin. And for those moments its like she is a puppy again, full of joy and playfulness. Its really sad to see them age and leave us so quickly. I surely hope that maybe one day science will help our friends live well into their 20's maybe to 30. But this video makes me tear up. And you can hear her call her dog "oldie" I do the same thing to my dog. Its sweet.

The fact that the deaf dog's whimpers sound no different than a non-deaf dog's whimpers show that a dog's emotions are internal and not some learned trait. I've heard deaf cats make sounds, and they are (like a human's) off pitch. We could learn something the goodness that is canine love.

Quite a few deaf dogs available for adoption at your local shelter. They are as good as any other dog, it's just up to you to learn the visual commands they will respond to.

Edit: It's not difficult for you and your dog to learn, just different (hint: vibrations, light, and touch get attention). If all else fails, a fence works great.
