The "Say my name" scene is in the top 5 greatest television scenes in Show history, easily!

You do understand that before Walter was diagnosed he was a truly noble man. He worked 2 jobs to support his family since they are going to have an unplanned second baby. After he became "corrupt" he became a monster and his actions towards the end were absolutely inexcusable (except the ending). His drive was just pride and Mike was right about him

The confusion between strong manliness and evil destruction of society and self.

Walt didn’t become evil, he just took care of business. He had enemies. It was kill or be killed. All the people in the game knew what they were getting into and he ended up realising that chemistry isn’t the only thing required to make and sell meth. You need instinct.

Holy shit walter white (spoiler alert) was given the opportunity to solve all his problems by taking that job his friend offered him and the only thing stopping him was his own pride. Because he refuses to listen to the suggestions of his far more rational wife he resorts to allowing an innocent woman to die; poisoning a child (allowing his closest partner and only friend to blame it all on himself); having the same friend murder an innocent man; and associates with a group of white supremacists in order to kill several more innocent men (after shooting his former and far more practical associate himself, again purely for his pride). He finally admits in the end that his reasons were entirely selfish. Your failure to recognize this as a tragedy and a cautionary tale about the pride of men puts you on the same level as angry adolescents who come away from fight club forgetting Tyler Durden was supposed to be the bad guy. You're less an intellectual and more a grifter profiting off the insecurities of men living in a world in which our voices are prioritized simply because we are men less and less. Nostalgia for a time in which it was seen as acceptable for us to subjugate others to our will is nothing more than a selfish human inclination.

Breaking Bad is a warning of what these ideas can do to people. Walter ends up destroying the lives of everybody around him.

You really don't understand the show

If you pay reaaaally close attention, you'll see that Breaking Bad condemns nearly everything done in the show. Every step taken up to "being a man" is really a step downward towards your own destruction. One example is, oh I dunno, the way Walt fucking looks at the end of the series and dies.

Dude missed the entire point of the show

I could listen to Andrew talk about literature or television all day, he really thinks deeply about narratives and their meaning

You know what you're talking about but you have no real concept as to why breaking bad is so acclaimed

I’m infuriated that he says he comes a man when he starts doing bad shit, he is a man, he supports his family and cares for them. That is enough. A man doesn’t have to be punching, threatening, killing, poisoning kids. Wow, what a man who poisons small kids. Is he a man later and not earlier? 😅😅

The Bulgarian translate of Breaking Bad is "In shoes of satan"

Don't agree with this, Mr. Klavan. it should 't be necessary to be evil to become a man.

This is one of the few Klavan theses I disagree with. I think BB is the story of how WW did not become a man, but instead chose the “easy” way out, and with each twist and turn, fell deeper into the abyss. There’s nothing manly about choosing crime over honest work.

The same is true for all of the gangster stories. They are choosing the wrong path to utilize their talents, and ultimately pay the price each time.

Seasons 1-2: wackiness and family sitcom.
Seasons 2-4: is Walt, Jessie, Hank gonna die?
Season 5: everything is wrapped up, so they shouldn’t be any sequels. And doesn’t insult the audience for it aka the last 3 seasons for game of thrones.

"I did it because i liked it"~Walter White

This is the wrong lesson to teach. And walt does not become a man. He becomes more of a coward. A violent criminal coward but a coward nonetheless. He should've just took the job and received payment from his friends no matter how fake. But his ego was too big.

You don't have to be evil or become evil to be a man you just need a backbone is all.

He is not a failure in his profession, just an overqualified chemistry teacher.
