Elements of a Short Story

7th grade language arts lesson

Setting: Tells the reader where and when the story takes place
.

Characterization: Creation of imaginary - people who appear to be real to the reader. The writer gives infomation about the characters in the story.

Plot :
A series of of events through which the writer reveals what is happening, to whom, and why.

Theme:
The "message" the writer intends to communicate by telling the story.
Different from the topic.
Must be written in a sentence.

Point of view:
The position of the narrator of the story and what the writer sees from that vantage point.
1st person (I.. Me.)

3rd person (He, she, they, them.)

This video is awesome even for adults who need to brush up on the basics of writing! I've been writing off and on for years just for fun in journals. I'm now 49. My husband and family have been bugging me to try to publish but I won't "let go" of some of my stuff - most of it it just hodge podge thoughts, but when re-reading them at times can definitely pick and choose what can bloom into some short stories or even a full blown novel. This video is very helpful in terms of pulling things together. Thank you.
