How do you find something when you don't know what you're looking for? That's the problem facing the "autism experts" behind Spectrum 10K, a recently announced research initiative that hopes to harvest the DNA of at least 10,000 autistic people.

I'm beginning to wonder until the Social Model of Disability prevails over the medical model amongst decision makers, we autistics cannot hope for much progress.

It is so reassuring that there are autistic people speaking out about this. Your work really gives me hope 🙏

Thank you for this identity-affirming piece and all of your work in the face of such apparent ignorance with Spectrum10K.

Please continue covering all of this information because I find it very scary if they can find the gene that actually can show that a person is autistic that’s fine but they go any further now it is dangerous very dangerous because that means if they do that then it would mean probably hurting a lot of people with trying to treat and get rid of autism on a permanent level which could take away the qualities that are good about the person who has autism and making them less than what they are and could cause more depression anxiety possibly deaths from suicide because of being altered as well as if a person has a baby and I want to find out if that baby has autism before being born it will give him the perfect opportunity to have an abortion which is one problem I also see huge problem

Yeah, I agree.
It's not our fault that are perception is different from an NT person.

The social constructs are created by a majority that cannot handle the fact that they're some (aka Autistic and ND people) that see another way to it. I'm annoyed that they don't trust us with our sense of judgment and pretty much think we're too dumb or not worthy to be concerned about.

Why not reverse it and genetic test for neurotypicals and see how far that gets.

You are doing a great job showing both side of the argument, it is possible to use genetic mapping to help autistic people but history has proven things like this lead to eugenics not progress. Im not opposed to a cure but that is only because my family is effected a bit differently than most but my hope is one day we can find a balance between rewiring the brains of those who want to be cured and supporting services for those who dont

I think that any attempt to eliminate diversity in any way is extremely disturbing and eminently foolish. Any differences or impairments are part of the fabric of life and always have been. We need, as a race, to decide to celebrate rather than eliminate them.

Oh, this touches upon SUCH difficult, such profound socio-political issues!
That discussion about screening for "bad" genes in the unborn children can eventually lead us back to the pro-life vs. pro-choice conflict, among many other things...

It's hard for me to form an opinion on such matters, and it terribly stresses me out.

Which makes me realize: we probably shouldn't put too much pressure on ourselves to figure it all out without making any mistakes.
If we try too hard on this, we'll end up fighting one another.

The only thing I'm positive about — is that researching and potantially manipulating human genome, in our current world — will create a horrendous power structure.
