It's dangerous everywhere for women that is why I highly recommend self defense. Always be aware of your surroundings ladies. The world is full of perverts even the ones that look "harmless". Anyway, she ain't lying about Mexico though. Unfortunately, most parts of south America are like that. It's never a good idea to be on your own after a night out partying.
