It's so funny that I just talked about the problem of capoing a 12-string in the video Alex and I did a couple of months ago. Walking around NAMM I stopped by the G7th booth and low and behold Tommy at G7th (who happens to be a subscriber) gave me this capo to check out. It basically solves the issue with my Taylor 12-string. Enjoy!

Not kidding here. How many of you have run your hand through your hair only to transfer sticky hair product to your guitar neck. Not a problem with this stuff. You’ll thank me later!

Hi Tom. I enjoyed the review of the G7 Capo. I have a 1972 Yamaha Red Label 12 string myself. The G7 capo is good, but I've had excellent results with a standard spring capo using a 1/4" elastic band under the capo. The softer rubber of the elastic allows better pressure over all the strings. Works perfectly. When I take the capo off I just slide the elastic to above the nut.

I’m a huge fan of these capo’s. I play 12 string a my primary instrument as a working musician here in Vegas, and probably capo at least half of my songs in a gig, all around the neck. One tip I’ve learned is to not ‘snap’ the capo off and on at tension. It’s best to loosen the tension screw first and bring up to tension as needed, banded upon where you are on the neck. You are 100% about the first fret. This is by far the best capo I’ve used on a 12 string guitar. Shub, Kyser, Dunlop, D’Addario/Planet Waves, none compare to the compensated G7th. I’m awaiting my first Heritage model with comp pad to arrive presently. Nice video dude!

I know that Roger McGuinn has mentioned he keeps his lower octave strings the original way on his Rick 12. Hitting the lower string first then the higher leaves a nice “ring” and/or “chime” effect

I just got the G7th Newport 12-string capo for my 1983 Guild D-212 and it works really well. All the strings ring out gloriously and it's really easy to use. Highly recommended.

What did 12 string players like Felder use before this capo came along?

I imagine that guitar has a 1 7/8 nut width. How would this work with a 1 3/4?

Tom, i am not sure what long term issues there might be when applying the capo on top of the fret but... I have been playing for 35 years and I have this year started placing my capo ‘on the fret’ and have found a cleaner tone, less buzz or mute string to string, and better intonation (yeah i know, I can’t explain it) when my capo is moved from one position to another up the neck. I have not had to replace my frets though my first thought is I will.. so far i have not and all is well. I play a Martin 12 and Martin D-41. I think there might be a number of people interested in you trying this and commenting on it... Ron in NC

Just recently bought one of these G7 Capos for my 12 strings, because the principle looks good to me. However, I'm not fully conviced. It hardly fits on the necks of both my acoustics (Ibanez and Diaon). Both have slightly fatter necks than the typical 6 string. The range for adjustment is just too small. I guess the best solution would be a Shubb with a compensated string pad or just softer than standard rubber pad.

Glad to see this.... Have you tried the G7th Capo for the six string guitar? I have it and like it...especially for Electric.

I've played a 12string Takamine F385 since I bought it brand new in 1974. It just felt right to me and I had to laugh hearing the joke re 12strings because it was so true. I know that there had always been a great difficulty with the guitars previous to the 70s but I think Alvarez started to get it right and others followed but it was Taylor, wasn't it, that really started to build truly playable and sustainable 12 string guitars. Why did you choose the maple body over rosewood or mahogany? Thanks for this video by the way. I had never considered before now the problems with regular capos that you bring up. Always assumed it was just more of the same.

just got one for my Takamine and it was a flop at first but after your good vibes i have it working, but it's kinda fumbley and $$$$ i got a D'Addario PW-CP-02 and not as fumbley and half the price?? so am i missing something?? the G7 has like little teeth kinda like stairs holding down the strings...

As for myself owning a Rickenbacher 12 string was my favorite as far as sound and playability next came the Guild acoustic . Both great guitars. I never owned a Gretsch but they too had an awesome sound .

Hi Tom,
G7s are a bit pricier than you think. The most basic G7 on Amazon is $30, and then quickly up from there to as much as $60 for the ones that flex to fit different radii. Thalia are also quite pricey. Since I’m very much an intermediate player, I’ll stick with a Kyser or Shubb. I do love 12-strings though. Play on!!

Just got one. Works great on my Ovation, but still trying to get it to work on my Danelectro 59 x 12. Seems to be harder on the 59 to slide right into the groove as easy on an acoustic neck, and lots more mute/buzz on the first string. Learning curve I guess, will keep toying with it. Great video this is where I found out about the capo so you did a service for G7th lol.
