If you don't know about @visualeconomiken yet, take a look at it and let us know what you think:

Guyana is one of the poorest countries in South America. However, huge oil deposits are being discovered in its waters. Forecasts indicate that by 2035 it could produce 1.5 million barrels per day. Guyana would therefore become the world's largest oil producer per capita. So the question is clear: Will the petrodollars boost Guyana's economic development and lift thousands of people out of poverty? Or will it become the new Venezuela? In this video we tell you about it.

Guyana has to make four major investments among others: military; education; health care; and urban planning.

Guyana is nowhere as dirt poor as this guy describes it. I lived in Guyana 30 years ago and even at that time people had food and other necessities. Fast forward to today and the people are living even better.

Hopefully the Guyanese will learn from the mistakes of their oil rich neighbours…Trinidad & Tobago.
Similar demographics, yet identity politics lead to the dramatic depletion of our sovereign wealth fund to more implement schemes that benefitted their core electorate factions rather than the wider population.

My advice to Guyana people: invest in education, domestic safety, trustworthy legal system, training bureaucrats, anti-corruption, revamp politics and election system, banking, industrial R&D, entrepreneurship, industrial infrastructure like city, electricity, water, sewage, road, seaport/airport, and healthcare.

Lived in Guyana for many years, it had comical levels of corruption at all levels. I remember my mother having to bribe cops to get her passport back from a thief. So i have very little faith in it effectively using it's oil revenue. But maybe they might make enough money to brute force positive change for it's people after all it's a pretty small country population wise.

I believe Guyana will do well. The country has been listed as poor for years. It’s time for us to shine.

Guyana should learn from ethnic conflicts. Racial harmony is key to success in a multi racial society. My wishes and prayers for all Guyanese.. make a prosperous country like Singapore.

I am a born Guyanese and I still live here. All the stats I hear here are about 80% true. When it comes to the politics and politicians, you are nowhere close to the nonsense we experience.

One of the very few International journalists that pronounced Guyana correct. Thank you 🇬🇾

Guyana should follow the Norway model of putting oil revenues into a trust and using only the interest.

Just to be clear, "Latin America" is defined as the portion of the South Americas that were colonized by the spanish/french or portuguese. Guyana is NOT part of Latin America. The correct title should say "Richest country in *South America*"

Been to Guyana twice, awesome country, reminds me of my own Jamaica. People were mixed but me being black and growing up around lots of Indians I know differences can easily be overcome when everyone lives as one people. A great country with a very bright future

this could very likely just be a another venezuela, and may end up actually hurting growth, as it removes any incentive for the government to reform their economy, but i hope im wrong, and they do seem to be trying to copy the Norwegian model, I hope they stick to it, and invest in longterm infrastructure that will benefit the country long after the oil is gone

I went to Guyana a few years ago before their big oil boom, it's quite underdeveloped, even compared to other formerly British Caribbean nations
