I remember that when the Olympics in Japan were happening, I heard a lot of times the word "shatter". They said, "she/he shattered another record." Another collocation that I heard was: "smash a record".

Did you take into account that oil companies begin to receive profit once projects are completed and oil pours out to consumers. Many companies just completed pipelines, and the balance sheets can now show profit because expenses are now down as project ended. Your journalism is biased.
