Panamanian Golden Frog Semaphore Wave

Is that Panamanian golden frog waving? Indeed, he is! Rarely captured on film, this “hand waving” is known as semaphore, and is seen in only a few frog species. PGFs use it to attract mates or “wave off” other males that encroach on their territory. Since they live near streams, this physical movement is useful when the rushing water drowns out vocalizations.

Panamanian here. It's so nice to see that so many people and organizations are trying to keep this species alive. For the ones who don't know, this species (and others) are incapable of living in the wild because of an infection: chytridiomycosis, which is caused by two fungi. It has claimed the lives of many other species, such as the Incilius periglenes (commonly known as the Golden Toad, from Costa Rica), and continues to endangered various populations of amphibians.
