Flyzone Micro S.E.5a - Maiden Flight (My 1st Flight Of 2013!)

The weather this year has been absolutely miserable, but it finally cleared up enough to allow me to take my first flight of the year. So I took my Flyzone Micro S.E.5a out for its maiden flight.

You may have seen my first attempt to maiden it, which didn't go well. The plane stalled on take-off. As I learned in this flight, the plane needed a ton of down-elevator trim, so that was obviously the cause of the stall. Now that I've got it trimmed out, it takes off and flies like a beauty!

Enjoy!

I'm not sure I could really show much on that though. The challenge of fixing a motor mount is that it is very important to get the down/right offset thrust-angle right, or else the plane will want to roll.

This would be great in a large indoor area, like a gym. It flies fine outdoors in low wind, though, too.

Thanks! It's a really easy flier. Very nice, calm, relaxing flight. :)

Hehe, had some time to catch up on some footage I had waiting to be edited. This is all for now. Got a couple ideas for more, but I haven't filmed them yet.

Yeah, the original maiden stall on takeoff was entirely due to trim, and me not giving full power and down elevator when it nosed up. Happened too fast for me to react, but I was prepared for it on this flight. :) Now that it's trimmed, it takes off beautifully. I also have the Nieuport 17 and they are very similar. The SE5a gear box may be a bit quieter, but flight characteristics are very similar. If you were to choose, I'd say go with which one you like the look of more. :)

It really is. Such nice detail, and really calm flight characteristics. :)

Yeah, we will definitely have to do that this season. It's a bit intimidating fixing a broken motor mount, but I'm sure we'll get it done. :)

I would say no, simply because this model is very delicate and not easy to repair. For a first time flier, if you want something small like this model, I'd suggest the HobbyZone Champ. That is what I learned to fly on. I have some videos of it on my channel if you want to check it out. :)

Yeah, it really does. Such an easy flier because of that. :)

Sounds like a perfect topic for a video!

These micro S.E.5a's are most realistic in flight.  You did a great job with yours!

Yeah, I went w/ the SE5a because of the quieter gear box and it does have a different motor so we'll see. I don't know where your from but you can have some of our 100+ weather w/ 5% humidity. Fall is always welcomed here in Nor Cal. Thanks for a quick response.

This plane is much easier to fly, but it is much more fragile than the Air Hogs. The Air Hogs are good for beginners because they can take a beating and not break. This biplane is meant for a pilot with a bit of experience.

The Nieuport doesn't climb as much with the throttle, so that must just be part of the flight characteristics of this plane. I bet it loops easier than the Nieuport due to that at least. :)

Great flight. I need to get mine out of the box and fly.

LMAO! Been there done that! I was seriously considering making a video title "Giant works on ultra-micro RCs, and it goes pretty much how you'd expect it to go...". hahaha

Glad you put this vid up after your maiden vid which explains why all the trim was needed. I wonder how this bird compares to the Nieuport 17?
