What is Backtrack?

The evolution of BackTrack spans many years of development, penetration tests, and unprecedented help from the security community. BackTrack originally started with earlier versions of live Linux distributions called Whoppix, IWHAX, and Auditor. When BackTrack was developed, it was designed to be an all in one live cd used on security audits and was specifically crafted to not leave any remnants of itself on the laptop. It has since expanded to being the most widely adopted penetration testing framework in existence and is used by the security community all over the world.

It's funny how 90% of people think that backtrack is ONLY for hacking Wi-Fi, well you would think so amount of videos on hear dedicated to it ! In the right hands Backtrack is a awesome power witch no system can withstand its mighty sward !

Using BT5 now (dual boot with Ubuntu), its a solid version. I am having a bit of trouble with getting flash such as Youtube to play despite loading the current versions via apt-get install. Had the same problem with Ubuntu 10.04(currently have 11.04 no prob). Good luck to all that want to use it. Start out with Ubuntu if you have never used linux before, then when you get the hang of using thermal/Linux then switch over.

@H4x0r18 I would recommend downloading the 32bit iso instead of the 64bit some applications (programs) such as those for arp spoofing/poisoning, I believe ettercap is one of them don’t want to work on the 64bit flavor without lots of goggling and headaches… still haven’t got mine to work. So I just loaded up the BT5r1 32bit ISO

@H4x0r18 @H4x0r18 don't want it to just work. I want what i am using to work even if it means i have to spend a couple of days in terminal. I did figure out my flash problem. Figured it was one of my plugin's. After finding instructions on how to install adobe flash for bt5 i skipped down to plugin part (what i thought was wrong), reinstalled both following their instructions, restarted and presto. Some times it is just the little things cause us the biggest headaches.

Backtrack runs under linux. Its not even close to windows.
