Coronavirus: Trump says Jacksonville, Fla. portion of Republican convention cancelled

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he had cancelled the Jacksonville, Fla. portion of the Republican National Convention, saying delegates will still place their vote in North Carolina, but the Florida portion would no longer take place.

He also said the convention will begin in North Carolina, claiming they were “never taking that off” from the plan.

Trump said that the decision to cancel the Florida portion of the rally is in relation to the increase in COVID-19 cases in the region, saying he wants to protect the American people.

A couple days ago, the Jacksonville sheriff, stated that he could not guarantee security for the Republican convention due to short notice, lack of adequate funding and lack of planning on the part of the RNC.

I live in Jacksonville, and I am so glad this event has been canceled. It was going to be a big mess.

Jacksonville is already crowded, and traffic here is already crazy, and due to the pandemic people on both sides of the political spectrum are stressed out already.

Having a huge in person, convention in the middle of a pandemic is crazy.
