the difference is that the reference point of Proverbs is objective (God ) and trusting your heart is a subjective reference point

Your head (logic) and your heart (love) as well as God's Word all have to agree. It is best to have others (who have Biblical Wisdom) review what you believe and challenge it, if need be. I found this out during Bible Study ! If they do not agree you need to probe down into why: is your logic flawed, is your heart deceived, is your understanding of God's Word wrong?

Replace God with “your religion” and suddenly it seems far less wise to simply ignore your own understanding. However, to the Christian, questioning religion would entail questioning God, which prevents them from ever recognizing the flaws in the beliefs they are supposed to hold. Effectively, God is a shield for anything that is supposed to be beyond criticism.
