NORWOOD, Ohio (WKRC) - A new therapy to get rid of stubborn body fat is now available in the Tri-State, and it's supposed to exercise the muscle for you.

The team at the Advanced Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center says this is the world's only noninvasive body shaping procedure, called Emsculpt.

"Emsculpt stands for electromagnetic energy. The high energy triggers the nerves, the motor neurons, to fire our muscles," said Dr. Jon Mendelsohn.

A computer is connected to pads, which are placed on the abs or another area on the body. Patient Jason Young says, as the intensity climbs, it feels like you're doing crunches.

Emsculpt is designed to help you build muscle and burn fat.

"You have fat loss because that muscle requires energy. That energy is coming from the local fat stores, which represents the energy," said Dr. Mendelsohn.

Karen Whitney, a physician's assistant, says the Emsculpt forces the area attached to contract.

"The studies show that a 30-minute session with Emsculpt is comparable to doing 20,000 crunches," she said.

You need several sessions at about $600 each for success.

"Unless you feel it, you really can't quite believe the intensity of the contraction," Whitney said.

The team shared before and after photos, and close to a dozen studies showed that, between three and six months, you see success following several treatments.

"Which was a diminishing of abdominal wall fat by up to 19 percent and increasing abdominal muscle thickness by 16 percent. At six months, those results were actually a little bit better without additional treatments," said Whitney.

Studies are still being conducted on long-term results.
