As a mechanic and professional driver, this is pretty good advice. Even automatic transmissions have low gears you can use to slow down enough to find a curb or wall that you can grind the sides of your tires into to slow down the rest if the way. You might pop a tire but that's a pretty cheap fix compared to wrecking your whole car beyond repair.
