A Message for ‘Shabbat Shuva,’ the Sabbath of Repentance

Just two days before Yom Kippur, on this first Shabbat of the year 5781, the Torah portion of Ha’azinu (‘Give Ear!) is read. Just prior to his death, Moses calls upon the very heavens and earth themselves to listen, and bear witness to his ‘song’… the history of the nation of Israel from its inception until the Messianic redemption, a song that spans every generation and includes love and consolation, rebuke and chastising, and ultimately, Redemption. Parashat Ha’azinu is the true Redemption Song…but internalizing its message depends on understanding the difference between hearing and listening. Truly listening can help us to connect heaven and earth.

The Torah portion of Ha'azinu (Deut. 32) is read on Shabbat Shuva, the 'Sabbath of Repentance' - Shabbat, Tishrei 8, 5781 - September 26, 2020
