People use to think no motion was the default. Like something that's moving would automatically slow down. So it was pretty crazy when Newton had the idea that something that's moving would keep moving forever unless something (like gravity) slows it down

This was actually pretty revolutionary for the time. The model that people had worked with until that point was from Aristotle who didn't understand friction and claimed that objects wanted to stay at rest. Newton uprooted this theory and proposed that an object would not stop or start moving with being acted on by a force

Ik this is satire, but people have to understand that up to that point, no one had really studied the motion of objects. It was just something everyone accepted and ignored, because its one of those things that is so engrained in people's consciousness that you never really stop to think about it. And by being the first to tackle such fundamental matters, he made numerous tremendous strides in both mathematics and physics.

you know i always thought about that in my highschool physics class but later on i learned that what makes the first law important is that it says : if there is no force the velocity of the object would remain constant, meaning if it was moving with a certain speed at first it would continue moving with that speed . that is a little counter intuitive at first glance because everything that moves around us eventually stopes due to friction but you can consider an astronaut floating in the outer space . if the astronaut collides with nothing it would just keep going for ever !
