Arrests made after fire in Turkish ski resort hotel | BBC News

At least 66 people have been killed in a fire that engulfed a popular Turkish ski resort hotel, leaving some to jump out of windows.

The fire broke out at the 12-storey Grand Kartal Hotel in Bolu during a busy holiday period when 234 people were staying there, taking 12 hours to be put out.

Four people have been arrested, including the owner, the justice minister says, as prosecutors had been allocated to investigate the blaze.

If the hotel is so remote, it should have had some sort of backup system. The fire exits are normally posted on the back of your hotel door so as soon as you shut your hotel door, you should at least inspect the map showing the exits - just as you do when you board a plane!

As a Turk, we were heartbroken the moment we heard about the fire. Many died in the fire. In fact, classmates wrote letters to the funeral of a 12 year old girl who died in a fire. It is a very sad situation...

There is no fire escape in the hotel. There is no fire alarm. There are no precautions against fire. All automatic doors were locked when the fire started. When the fire started, the hotel owners ordered the employees to save the cars in the garage. They did not say to wake up the people sleeping in the hotel.

goes to show the hotel didn't put any effort into preventing such an incident.
The hotel is so large, yet they didn't have escape ladders nor extra staircases for emergency cases.
Ruthless business owners. And of course they will shift the blame on a worker from the restaurant.

There was a fire alarm but it was not activated. There was no fire escape. Many people died, and almost all of them were young people. People preferred to die by jumping from windows to avoid burning to death. There wasn't even a fire extinguisher. The fire department was far away but still took longer than expected to arrive. There is so much neglect.
