FBI vetting Guard troops in DC amid fears of insider attack ahead of inauguration

U.S. defense officials say they are worried about an insider attack or other threat from service members involved in securing President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration, prompting the FBI to vet all of the 25,000 National Guard troops coming into Washington for the event.

The massive undertaking reflects the extraordinary security concerns that have gripped Washington following the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump rioters. And it underscores fears that some of the very people assigned to protect the city over the next several days could present a threat to the incoming president and other VIPs in attendance.

Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy told The Associated Press on Sunday that officials are conscious of the potential threat, and he warned commanders to be on the lookout for any problems within their ranks as the inauguration approaches. So far, however, he and other leaders say they have seen no evidence of any threats, and officials said the vetting hadn't flagged any issues that they were aware of.

"We're continually going through the process, and taking second, third looks at every one of the individuals assigned to this operation," McCarthy said in an interview after he and other military leaders went through an exhaustive, three-hour security drill in preparation for Wednesday's inauguration.

How do you vet a member of the National Guard? What are the criteria? There's much more we need to do here. Our fate as a society depends on whether we can bring ourselves to do it. In the same way that the F.B.I. is vetting the National Guard members protecting D.C. for the inauguration, might we vet our police forces and law enforcement agencies all over the country? Our prison guards and immigration agents? Our state and federal legislators, our governors, and our presidents? All of these bodies and agencies have been infiltrated by abusive racist ideologues who cause suffering to disempowered people; the poor, minorities, aliens, convicts. Contempt for them isn't an option here. We've failed to protect them and by failing to do so we've allowed our society to drift to the brink of destruction at the hands of their tormentors. If we don't turn our thinking around and get to a place where we're not okay with some groups suffering and even dying from mistreatment, if we leave these perpetrators of suffering in place in these agencies, they will win, we will lose, chaos will engulf us, democracy will die, and terrorism will reign right here in America. In fact, it already does, it's just not touching the rest of us yet. But if we don't take effective steps to eradicate it, it will.
