Buddy Ebsen never smoked. He couldn't. When he was supposed to be the tin man on the wizard of oz, all the metallic flakes from the makeup got into his lungs and he had breathing issues bad. It's what killed him, though he lived to be like 95 years old. You can see it when he did the 1999 "revisit" of Jed Clampett. And if you watch his face closely in the BH in some scenes you can see he's struggling a bit. Irene Ryan smoked like a chimney. Chain smoked. Donna Douglas said she used to plead with Irene to at least cut down a bit. I don't know why those who did this commercial didn't have her smoking since there were a couple of advertisements using the Clampetts with granny smoking a corn cob pipe.
