Born on April 15. 1938 in Tunis, Tunisia, actress Claudia Cardinale is best remembered internationally for her role as Angelica in the 1963 film The Leopard. The 84-year-old's career has spanned more than 60 years and numerous genres.

Cardinale got her first taste of fame after winning the Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia competition in 1957. The grand prize was an all-expenses paid round trip to Italy. With the help of her mentor and future husband Franco Cristaldi, Cardinale quickly was offered lucrative film contracts.

After making her film debut in 1958's Sharif in Goha, Cardinale landed roles in hit Italian films like 1960s Rocco and His Brothers, 1961 Girl With A Suitcase, and 1962s Cartouche. Seemingly overnight, she had become one of the best-known actresses in not only Italy but all of Europe.

After appearing in The Leopard and Federico Fellini's 8 ½ in 1963, Cardinale became well-known throughout the United States and Britain thanks to her role in The Pink Panther. For the next several years, Cardinale would appear in a number of Hollywood films as well as Italian features. American audiences probably remember her best from her starring role in 1968s Once Upon a Time in the West.

In the late 60s, after growing tired of Hollywood and not wanting to become just another cliché, Cardinale returned back to solely appearing in Italian and French films. She's been active in the film industry ever since.

For me, it was ALWAYS Claudia. As a teenage kid, when the subject of most beautiful woman in the world came up, most of my buddies said Raquel was it. I always countered their opinions with Claudia. Both were beautiful women, with amazing bodies, however, Claudia's eyes. Her EYES! So magical and expressive. I suppose I should be glad to have never met Ms. Cardinale in person. If she ever looked at me, I would melt into the ground on which I stood.

The Leopard is my all-time favorite movie and she's an important part of that film. Other roles I especially like are in Fellini's 8 1/2 and Once Upon a Time in the West. A voluptuous beauty and fine actress in these and other movies. None of us in our Eighties are what we once were, but we can still appreciate and remember.
