China Stepping Up As US Loses Credibility

Emma is joined by Trita Parsi, Executive Vice President at the Quincy Institute, to discuss a recent article in Foreign Affairs titled "How China Became a Peacemaker in the Middle East," co-authored by Khalid Eljabri. Trita Parsi highlights China's surprising role in facilitating a normalization agreement between Saudi Arabia and Iran, which signals a significant shift in their foreign policy and underscores the need to recognize China's diplomatic influence on the global stage. They also examine the failure of the United States' long-standing involvement in the Middle East, characterized by biased actions and favoritism toward allies, and conclude the interview by addressing the US elite's hawkish stance towards China and its impact on the United States' reluctance to support Middle Eastern autonomy.

Missed point in this discussion. It was in the US's perceived strategic interest to keep Saudi Arabia and Iran as antagonists. An alliance between the two is a threat to the US presence, to its 'divide-and-conquer' approach and most of all, to Israel.

The US would never ever be able to help mediate a peace deal when of course Iran and increasingly Saudi Arabia are at odds with the US. That being said Sunni and Shia will never be at peace with each other. Their disagreements are religious, which is worse than rhan it being personal.

I'm no expert but it seems to me that its simply the case that oil is gradually losing its importance and the usa is losing interest in the middle east. The usa had a vested interest in political instability in the middle east now it doesn't matter anymore. My way of seeing it is that who should be worried is Israel. This scenario has been talked about since at least the nineties.

Embarrassing for US. Shows like Madam Secretary have been warning us about this for over a decade, btw.

The US is the largest weapons exporter in the world. We thrive on conflicts as weapons sales helps drive our economy and line the pockets of our politicians. Our pivot to Asia starting at the end of Obama’s term was meant to stir conflict in a new region for new economic opportunities (weapons sale), hence, the anti-China propaganda for the past 7 years.

The US didn’t lose any credibility in the Middle East. Can’t lose what you never had

US mideast policy is a long history of political failure, but acting as though China's 'peace plan' in Ukraine is a serious or neutral proposal is farcical.

The Chinese goal is simple. It wants an economic shield around the globe the USA can’t just stomp through with the military.
