I play on console and when you spawn on your bag, it would often dig up your stashes if they were close.
Another thing, I think it might work if you use a sleeping bag instead of a stash, to try and find someone's stash.
I use stashes all the time and I put them in rocks, so that if they get uncovered, they are still not visible.
