Climbing Mt Rainier - The Disappointment Cleaver Route

Hey everybody! Took a short break from astrophotography to go climb a mountain! We actually had a time slot reserved in 2021, but had it cancelled and pushed to 2022 due to dangerous conditions.

Our climb up the DC route (7/16/22 - 7/18/22) had spectacular conditions (minus the wind) this time around! The mountain is actually quite dynamic though and the crevasses along the route have changed dramatically since then. Regardless, the heavy pack and glaciers made this easily the hardest thing I've ever done. It was a bit touch and go there on the upper glaciers but we powered through.

I glossed over some of the nitty gritty in order to keep things brief, but feel free to ask any questions you have about how we did our reservations, details of the climb, logistics, or even the video!

0:00 Introduction
3:36 Day 1
8:40 Day 2
15:03 Day 3

As I didn't make the lovely music, I'm going to shout out the creators/bands for the songs as they occurred in chronological order. If you liked any of the tracks, do look them up!

Ingraham Glacier is one of the most dangerous places on Rainier.
June 1981: 11 climbers died there in a matter a minute.
Looong before we used the Cowlitz glacier – Cathedral gap route. We went straight up the Cowlitz glacier from Camp Muir.
We went through a gap of Gibraltar and a place called cadaver gap (aptly named) then onto the Ingraham glacier.

Great video, what month did go? My daughter and myself are set to climb in mid may of 2024 with RMI. How old was the oldest on your team? Just curious as i will 61 when we make our attempt. Again thanks for the great video

Excellent video Kyle! Thank you for uploading. I have a different question for you- Do you happen to know the name or have public contact information for the African American climber in your group? I'm trying to assemble a group of us to climb Mt Rainier next year. Thanks!

Congrats on your success! Have you considered Denali as a future challenge? I just made it to the top of Rainier using the same route as you, and now I'm looking into Denali for myself.
