it reminds me of nucleosynthesis. i'm no scientist, but the best i can put it is the clouds of gas in space compress and particles combine into atoms, first Hydrogen, then Helium and so on. These clouds become stars. Then, when they're too compressed and heavy, they reach a point at which they implode and the atoms of the elements formed fly away like confetti. i might be wrong somewhere but. i think it's beautiful

in the title of the song, mitski refers to human bodies as "crushed little stars". beautiful and to be appreciated, but ultimately temporary and fated to return to their original form as part of the ground. at the start of the song, you can see that mitski feels incomplete because she "isn't doing anything" and feels that she needs more. she desperately wants to contribute to society. the symbolism of "crushed little stars" here could also mean she knows she is full of potential but wastes it and does nothing with it in the end. mitski then says that she wants to see the whole world, but she doesn't even know how she can pay rent to stay alive without that luxury. mitski often repeats this notion that she feels the need for something far bigger than herself even though she has no idea how to/no ability to achieve this. mitski repeats in the chorus, asking if the someone would kill her in Jerusalem. Jerusalem is seen as a place of sorrow, but also redemption and new beginnings. she then says that she better ace that interview, and that the way to "ace" aforementioned interview is to tell them that she isn't afraid to die. she is willing to give up anything and everything she has, including her life, to get a job position because she is so incredibly desperate for money she is willing to risk her entire being. mitski says she works better under a deadline and she will pick an age at which to disappear. this means that she has set a date in the future of which to commit suicide and this part of the song indicates that the idea in her head that she is temporary and that she will die one day and that will be of her own will satisfies her and pushes her to keep going, because it will all be over by the time she has set for herself, and until then she can try again and try again and try again to better herself. she then repeats "kill me in Jerusalem" not as a question of if someone would, but an order to do so. she is desperate for death.

for some reason (especially after seeing NWH) i associate this with spiderman's backstory/motivation. in every iteration, the death of a loved one makes him want to use his power for good ("i should tell them i'm not afraid to die") and also just the general superhero sentiment of "i pick an age when i'm gonna disappear". also, originally he is a photographer who works with local news publications, which ties in "i work better under a deadline" and "i better ace that interview". in the og spiderman movies, he struggles to pay rent. him also being a superhero fits "won't you kill me in jerusalem" because he wants to be a martyr, that's basically what superheroes do. i dont know, this song hits hard and i was thinking about this since i just saw no way home and got back into marvel.
