I have a gorgeous, kind, hard-working husband (he was raised Muslim). I used to be a typical American girl although towards the intellectual, conservative side.. now I am very traditional and it shocks me what people think/say is morally neutral/okay or even remotely responsible. There is so much darkness in this world and people are so lost.. meaning that some of them believe this world is all there is and chasing distractions, evil, sin (haram). I used to be on that side of life. I can't even describe how much better it is over here, in the light of Allah and with my faith to guide me. I absolutely know Allah brought me my partner/soul mate. I started to truly believe in fate the day I met him. Something shifted, my soul came alive. He introduced me to my faith and we built a life together that is beyond my wildest dreams.. it is a simple life and so so sweet and beautiful.**Alhamdullilah**

Any practicing Christian or Jewish woman would follow the exact same paradigm Sadia is labeling as "Eastern". You don't have to move to the Middle East to find a marriage minded woman. These women are found in faith based communities.

I would describe it as the west being more unisex but it creates more negotiations (what she describes as competition), which basically means more arguing and problems. Whereas the east has more defined roles so theirs less arguing.

In the west, every single contribution, sacrifice, and decision is itemized on a proverbial scorecard. Many couples in the west constantly argue over the other partner not sacrificing enough or having too much say. In the east there’s less argument because it’s already predefined who’s gonna do what and decide what.

For example, a marriage in the west can easily be ruined with one partner resenting the other that they have to sacrifice their career to take care of the kids or one partner contributes more to the communal bills than the other. However, in the east it’s already decided and socially enforced who’s going to sacrifice their career to childcare and who’s going to contribute more financially. It’s like going into a marriage with a simple, easy to fulfill business plan. But in the west, it’s a figure it out as you go strategy, with the only statute being that everything needs to fair and square. It becomes complicated and contentious very quick when trying valuate how much bargaining power conceding who’s parents you end up living closer too, sacrificing your body to be pregnant, or never getting to see your kids because you work two jobs has. Simple gender roles can be bliss
