What i took from this video is apart from the lithium one had false information on it, was that if you had a decent looking cover for them, lead acid is actually a viable quite good option and if i can get something in the range of 25 -30 miles with pedal assist from a lead acid battery maybe keep it to 20-25 to not put any stress on the battery, this is way more miles than i would ever need so lead acid is a realistic affordable option. We're always told lithium is much better, it lasts longer but its about 10 times the price. Theres no way it lasts ten times longer. So price wise even if you had to replace your lead acid batteries more often, it would still work out way cheaper to use lead acid batteries, which can be recondiotioned and put back into service. You cant do that with lithium.

Great video, just what I needed to know. Was on the verge of buying one of those cheap batteries. Seen the price and thought I can get three lead acids new, for one-third the price. You just confirmed that is the best solution. They also don't explode and burn your house down. 😮

Thanks from England for the video. I bought an ebike and the battery was rubbish. I have a tricycle and I'm gonna try lead acid, because I don't care what it looks like as long as I have range. Have you built a ion battery yet, and if you do can you video it so people can have an easy video to follow. I love your video, it's to the point, and I wish more were like yours. All the best mate.

Dude...Use lifepo4 batteries in series. They are 87 bucks each and 3 are 10lbs. They last 5.5 years if you charge every day or 2000 cycles.
I am using them now on my ebike. They are the safest lithium batteries and are more heat resistant which you need in Las Vegas.
Use 14awg wire to jump them for 36 volt in series. They 12ah each and 87 bucks on Amazon now. Right me if you want more info.
You may have to balance them every once in a while and need a lifepo4 charger. They are a tad heavier than lipo but much better.
Try them will love them.

I have a similar motor you can easily run them on 54v with the original Controller . I'm using a 720wh battery at full throttle I get around 40km.

The other advantage of lead acid battery is that it is much safer, Rupture one of the Li Ion cells and you are looking at a potential fire which may be difficult to put out. Great video, good to see a comparison of the two.

make sure to keep your lead-acid batteries in good shape by using them frequently also, make sure to keep the water levels good on the batteries and if it is low fill it up with distilled water and let it charge for a while.

in 1979 i got a friction drive kit and used a lead/acid battery. all simple and cheap. i rode it to work in downtown kc, mo all the time. it was great. never failed me. all this comparison means nothing to me until the prices are the SAME INITIALLY.. for the "average" person lion batteries are ludicrously high priced. if you don't have the initial investment then who cares if they are "better"?

Try power tools batteries, you can get dewalt 18 and 20v quite cheaply, a 4ah battery is around $20, so for about 100 american pessos, you can build a 36-40v 8ah battery

Others have done it already

You need to increase your leads to huge your losses are massive with those thin wires. Use huge pro jumper lead width as a guide.

This video has made up my mind on which battery to go for in converting my adult tricycle to an E-Tricycle I want to use it to recover from heart surgery and get a little fitter I already use the Tricycle but can not go as far as I want in my present health. So an electric motor is the answer for me. With lithium batteries costing so much I could have half a dozen 12 volt acid batteries for the price of 1 lithium battery have you any idea which 12 battery I should go for

Great test

I have 12v7ah x2 battries lead acid and it gives only 10km / 6mi range

do you need to change the lithium BMS if you use lead acid battery ?

Can you give me some guidance on swapping my acid battery (48v 1500 w) on my electric atv to a lipo battery?

I have come across a new concept. It's a combination of the two battery types. Use lithium for power on demand and trickle power at a fixed quantity from the storage lead acid batteries. They are better designed to output small amounts of power for long periods. They could make great range extenders on a lithium bike, but, i would rather they were on a trailer. I think i would rather carry a solar panel and stop for coffee breaks. But i would always use a reputable battery for both my lithium and or lead acid.

fully charged lithium 36v 10.4ah goes ok for less than a mile then dead cuts out then switch battery off then on again and ok for less than a mile done this 6 times. I connect my other battery goes fine. It seem cut after same distance each time.
Any suggestions where I should look for the problem.

Try lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4)
Good blend of power and range. And not very flammable

I have done the same with a Prophet Graveler 36v 250W read hub motor. The cost of a new battery is around 5000 Rand here in South Africa. 12v 7Ah LAB are R200.00 each so 600 for 3 to make a 36v bank. I attached the wires to the lithium battery pins on the base bracket (bottle battery like your one). So I can buy 8 banks of 3 new batteries for the price of poor quality lithium batt. The weight gain is around 5kgs hardly noticeable. The batteries are on the rear carrier which does make the CG higher and bike can easily tipple over. My next plan is to mount them in a triangle under the cross bar. Maybe make a ventren motorcycle petrol tank sort of box???

Depending where you are those batteries can be bought for 6 to 8 $ new and found on Amazon.
