The War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714) embroiled all the European powers in a conflict that shaped modern Europe with lasting global consequences.

In 1708 the allied powers — Great Britain, the United Dutch Provinces and the Holy Roman Empire had brought France to her knees. Rejecting King Louis XIV’s offers of peace, the allies decided on one more push to achieve total victory. This resulted in the Battle of Malplaquet (1709). Hundreds of thousands of men from all over Europe fought over a few kilometers of ground across the modern Belgian/French border, resulting in close to 35,000 casualties. The scale of the slaughter shocked Europe and led to the end of the war.

Simon MacDowall will discuss the political and military aspects of this battle, placing it in the wider context of the conflict and looking at the lasting consequences in Europe and the wider world.

Peter drake seems like a bit of a scoundrel, he cocked his carbine as he approached to surrender? No wonder the German officer pointed his pistol at him! Seems like a silly way to approach a surrender with a cocked firearm!

This is amazing, thank you so much! Love it. Where can I find more lectures on early modern warfare like that?

Not every battle or war that involves field fortifications and heavy artilery is like WW1. Espeacialy not from that era. Its just silly to go "Oh look just like WW1" whenever a battle has field fortifications in it.
