Motown did not want to produce this album. But Marvin was a huge artist and finally got his way. This was probably one of the first concept albums ever made. The whole album is amazing.

I loved your reaction. I could tell you really felt the song. That’s the power of Marvin Gaye. This song sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it as an 8 yr old in 1971. The lyrics are still relevant to our current state of affairs.

Your grandfather had great taste in music! Marvin was THE MAN.

Back in 1971, they did play this on the radio. It reached #1 in the Billboard R&B Singles chart and #9 in the Billboard Pop Singles chart. That is huge. Nothing that comes out today can even come close to what was produced in the 60's and 70's. No autotune, REAL instruments, real musicians, real voices, real talent. This song is still relevant today - a lot of what he says in the lyrics is going on today. It is so sad that we lost Marvin so young and so tragically.

MORE MARVIN PLEASE !! He is my my favorite singer of ANY genre.💗🎶🎵🎼 Music was the BEST in late 60s early 70s. Our generation had it ALL.💗 TRAGIC how his life ended.😢 MERCY MERCY ME!

Brotherr thank you for your the most honest and heartfelt reaction. Marivin's music like this was something they never wanted us to hear! This is a true "Gehtto Lullaby".

Marvin was the most soulful singer I ever heard. He was way ahead of his time. His composition “What’s Goin’ On” was a social anthem for ills that continue to plague us today. He went against Berry Gordy who didn’t want him to record it. Thankfully, Marvin won out. He was a musical genius and he sang about things that people didn’t want to talk about. Please do a reaction to What’s Goin On. That was a song that changed lives. R.I.P. Marvin. 💔💔

I'm 75, an old Vietnam vet. I bought this album in 1971 when I got back to the states and I couldn't stop listening to it. I grew up in a suburb of Detroit and listened to almost exclusively Motown. Album " What's Going On " brought me to tears while listening to it the first time as it still does to this day. I loved your reaction to it. Marvin Felt the injustice deeply. One of my top 3 albums of all time.

Marvin was pure genius. I'm 72 this year, I bought this album when it first came out, and I still have it and listen to it regularly. Marvin had an enormous social conscience, what a pity more world leaders don't follow in his footsteps. the irony of it all is he was shot and killed by his own farther who didn't agree with his lifestyle. (he was a preacher) enough said.

He had to fight to get this album done. It is so real and sung with so much of his soul. Marvin was a true treasure. I still remember exactly where I was when he was killed by his own father while trying to protect his mother from his abuse

This song was way ahead of its time when Marvin Gaye had to fight to get it on the airwaves. Marvin Gaye was a National Treasure that was gone too soon.

There was no prerecorded music back then. Every instrument you heard was a REAL musician playing REAL instrument. As a musician, it make my heart soar when I see and here real people play actual instruments.

Thanks for this ! Marvin Gaye is a favourite of mine from when he was singing with Tammy Terrell back in the 60’s!
This music was so popular & Marvin insisted that the album be recorded 🥰 Have listened to this so many times & it still gives the message that was relevant in 1970 right to the present. Marvin gave the world something very special & important … Who are they to judge us is so true.
I still am heartbroken 💔 & remember the day I heard Marvin had been killed by his father, still shed tears to this day ☮️

I'm a 68 year old white country boy that remembers this being played on the 'new' FM radio stations. Marvin Gaye was a lot of people's wakeup call. Loved him. Cried when he died.

This is a social protest song, and probably the best one if it’s time. The late 60’s and early 70’s were full of these songs on AM radio. This video was added decades after this song came out. We listened to this song and saw the images in our minds. It’s always amazed me how this song had such deep lyrics to such a funky beat.

Beautiful music, beautiful lyrics. Marvin sang so beautifully about the problems in the world, he's one of my all time favourite artists. Immersive video yes, you're soon to watch another truly immersive video, the story of one sky. Many blessings to you and your family ❤🙏
