Dartmouth Steam Railway - 150th Anniversary Gala - 16/08/14

Celebrating 150 years since the opening of the Paignton to Kingswear section of the Dartmouth and Torbay Railway, the Paignton and Dartmouth Railway held a special gala over the third weekend of August. The gala would utilise the whole of the line's current operational fleet, featuring an intensive timetable of passenger services, demonstration ballast trains and even a two coach shuttle operated by the line's two diesel shunters between Paignton and Churston.

Locos in service included:

- BR(W) 7800 Class 4-6-0 no.7827 'Lydham Manor'
- GWR 4200 Class 2-8-0T no.4277 'Hercules'
- GWR 5205 Class 2-8-0T no.5239 'Goliath'
- BR Class 25 no.D7535 'Mercury'
- BR Class 08 0-6-0 no.D3014 'Samson' *
- BR Class 03 0-6-0 no.D2192 'Titan' *

Shots included are:

- 5239: Greenway and Bascombe Road Bridge.
- 4277 & 5239: Goodrington and Greenway.
- D7535: Goodrington and Broadsands Viaduct.
- 7827: Broadsands Beach, Bascombe Road Bridge and Greenway Halt.

A rather mixed day for me, missing out on certain shots due to various reasons, having to changes plans around and messing up a few shots. As well as 7827's awkward performance on the ballast train, being opened up where she can't be seen, then being shut off where she can. However, I did get the double headed tanks and two very nice performances from 7827 and D7535 on Goodrington Bank.

Love the two 2-8-0Ts doubleheading. That's a lot of power there. They managed both "Ilkley Moor baht' At" and "Colonel Bogey" on the whistle too, very impressive. Superb shot of 7827 climbing up to Churston.

Hi there STTW, a great video and perfect takes of the DSR 150 anniversary of Churston to Kingswear. Unknowlingly, I was actually taking a picture of you at Goodrington with my little compact. I was at the top of platform 2 steps, filming the double-header special to Kingswear (I too managed to get the whistle tune). That sunny day I managed to get a few interesting shots along the line, including the freight rake shunting at Churston, but not a patch on your quality though. I will put clips of the Friday and the Saturday up shortly. Dave

I've often wondered how they link 2 loco's up together to work in tandem, without them working against each other. Is it just 2 drivers & a lot of skill?
