A facility run by AeroFarms (USA) near Newark, New Jersey, USA, which was opened in November 2016, has the capacity to provide grocery stores in New Jersey and New York with 2 million lb (907,000 kg) of greens annually. 250 different varieties of vegetables and herbs, including kale (inset), rocket, and mizuna, are grown at the farm on trays stacked on 12-tier shelving systems that may reach heights of 30 feet (9.1 metres). In comparison to field farming, the site's aeroponic technologies utilise 95% less water.
