It’s crazy to think that our entire planet is just one tiny ball in a gigantic, probably infinite universe full of unbelievable features. And while most of it still remains unknown to us, scientists made a lot of really cool discoveries in the last few years. What did they find? Could there even be life somewhere in the universe?
NASA has confirmed the existence of water on the moon's sunlit surface, indicating that the chemical component is more widely spread than previously thought. Situated at 45,000 feet in the stratosphere, NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy has made the finding. Those heights allow researchers to stare at objects in space with minimal water vapor interference.
Clavius crater is a huge crater in the moon's southern hemisphere. SOFIA employed a special infrared camera that can distinguish between water's 6.1 micron wavelength and that of its chemical relative hydroxyl, or OH.
Two years prior, NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft had observed unusual magnetic activity in near-Earth space. Due to the turbulence in this environment, researchers were unsure if magnetic reconnection could occur in the magneto sheath before this study. According to the study published in Nature on May 9, the new 3D MMS observations demonstrate that magnetic reconnection behaves differently in the magneto sheath.
The particles move too quickly along narrow field lines only a few kilometers wide for MMS equipment to collect. A novel technique was created to collect data from the magneto sheath using one of the MMS equipment, the Fast Plasma Investigation, to better understand how turbulent magnetic fields lose energy.
The 2015 Halloween season went quite spooky for some citizens. In nine states, people saw a massive fireball in the sky. The meteor was so large and dazzling that it could be seen from northern Michigan to Georgia, some 900 km away.
Witnesses said the thunderous explosion had a rainbow of colors when it reached Earth's atmosphere. Almost 200 people contacted the IMO to report their encounters. A security camera video shows the fireball growing in size as it approaches the surface before dissipating. Astronomers discovered iron and titanium in the atmosphere of a planet outside our solar system. KELT-9b is the hottest exoplanet ever discovered. The planet is hotter than most stars.
It sounds like a bad 1990s TV show: two clever brothers are separated at birth, only to reconnect years later, and they are bitter enemies. Physicists from UC Berkeley and Harvard's Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory think this is our own sun's story.
They claim our solar system was created as a binary, but the colder, dimmer sibling rocketed somewhere in the outer solar system. Nemesis occasionally approaches close enough to disrupt asteroids in the outer belt. Some now believe Nemesis was responsible for the dinosaur demise.
Out of all the modeled scenarios, the astronomers' lone conclusion was that all stars of mass surrounding the sun begin as wide Class 0 binaries with egg-shaped dense cores, and then about 60% split up over time.
This was the first evidence supporting the long-held assumption that most Sun-like stars are born as binaries. Pavel Kroupa of the University of Bonn concluded previously that all stars are binary.
This scorching exoplanet, in the constellation Cygnus, is a "ultra hot Jupiter". KELT-9b is a gas giant like Jupiter, our solar system's largest planet. But it's three times the mass and diameter of Jupiter, and it's very close to its blazing parent star, KELT-9.
The ultra hot Jupiter is an unofficial phrase for an exoplanet with temperatures surpassing 3,100°F or 1,700°C. They're so hot that they resemble stars while being planets.
KELT-9b may reach 7,800°F or 4,300°C.
