I've heard Richard Carpenter say that this is their biggest hit internationally. It was #1 here in the USA on all three trade magazines (Cashbox, Billboard, Record Word) the week of January 25, 1975. Million seller gold record. It was voted #1 a few years ago in the UK of all the Carpenters' hits. While I prefer the Marvelette's version because of its raw teenage perspective, this version is magical and fun. This version builds and builds, with the signature Carpenters overdubbed harmonies and fuzz guitar. I was 15 when this version came out and was not aware of the Marvelettes version until later.
