How To Build Affordable, Space-Saving Gear Lockers from Baltic Birch!

Join Wranglerstar in his workshop as he tackles the intricate task of building custom gear lockers from the finest Baltic Birch plywood—without any pre-made plans. Navigating the build process without a blueprint is a true test of craftsmanship, requiring foresight into how each decision impacts the overall design and functionality. It's about creating not just for utility but for aesthetics too. Why settle for anything less than beautiful?

In this video, Cody explores the capabilities of his new M18 Milwaukee Track Saw, a critical tool in achieving the seamless look that all skilled carpenters strive for: no visible nails or screws. He’s thrilled with the results - lockers that are as stunning as they are functional.

Stay tuned for part 2 of this project where we continue to refine and perfect our craftsmanship. Don't forget to hit like, subscribe, and join us next time in the workshop!

Very nice. The only thing that runs through my mind is the 3/8" gap makes a great vent and a good access point for a mouse to a place where Momma Kitty can't follow. Since I was taught not to offer criticism without a solution. My humble offering is to put some galvanized mesh down there and use a wood strip to hide the edges of it so they don't catch anything in the cubby.

"I just start building then come up with clever solutions to my lack of planning" 😂 Gold.

So now he’s a cabinet maker too. Well done, Cody!

My one alteration: gap the hinged benches 3/8 on each side. Moisture rises and the wood may swell. Oh, and mount a vertical strip on on the back underside of each seat that firmly abuts the hinge to offer rearward support and help take pressure off the hinge when a person is seated.

God Bless!

Very cool design!
Might add some strips of wood under the lid, so they'll take the most of your weight when you sit on the bench (now only the tiny screws of the piano hinge take the weight).

@10:47 the tranquile masterpiece takes shape. The video editing and pride speaks loud. Oh and the “well beloved, that’s about all I have time for today” pure comedic genius

Figuring out "Order of events" is my favorite part of a project.

the vent in the bottom also makes it possible to sweep dirt out easier

What about adding some support strips for the seats on each side inside? It looks like the strength of the seat just in the screws and hinge.

I made similar cubbies for my daughters but I mounted the piano hinge in the gap between the boards and screwed into the vertical/cut edge. That way it’s more hidden, cheers

Very nice! Do you think you might need to brace the back of the seat, it looks like all the weight is hanging on the hinge when you sit on it?

That’s nice and clean looking with seeing no fasteners nice job.

As an east coast man I must admit a small amount of jealousy towards that powerful west coast stance. Along with his immaculate hair piece. Simply stunning…

OB's "must be nice" was great. Love it.

CAD as in Cardboard-aided Design is always helpful. You can quickly mock up and modify a full size prototype with a box cutter and tape. And it’s a good way to use of all those Amazon boxes we all receive. That’s how us East Coast Prohos roll.

Mr W, I don't know much about cabinet making either. I have a strong interest in woodwork.

Personally I would add a piece under the bench seats to that your weight isn't relying on the small screws, as part of the hinge.
This may already be a part of your plan although I felt it necessary to mention.

this is a great design, thank you for the video. for added security and stability so that the henge does not fail over time, if you add a simple 1x4 to the sides right under where the henge is will make the seat last much longer

My only add on would be some sort of seat support on the side walls of the under seat storage area. Maybe some 1 inch thick scrap pieces that would go 3/4ths of the way to the hinge from the front of the seat. Then you could drill through the side wall's and put in some wooden pegs with glue. When you finish the locker the little wooden pegs being a different wood would show up as nice little detail to show it wasn't just slapped together with screws.

move the place where your names are going to go to the top shelf so its above the helmet instead of below. That will give you more headroom

Wonder if some 1x2 runners flush with the front lip would help support the seat. Seems like the hinge could eventually become a weak point.
