Every April during Spring Carnival, Carnegie Mellon University students race buggies up and down steep hills in and around campus The tradition was born 99 years ago. The construction and maintenance of each rolling vessel, which carries a human driver, are closely guarded by each team. Fringe, an independent Carnegie Mellon student organization, allowed a rare visit into its shop for a behind-the-scenes tour.

In the 70s they had a down hill run in Signal Hill, Long Beach, ca. They were enclosed streamline skateboards that looked exactly like these but with skateboard trucks and large skateboard wheels..
