THE LOST LEONARDO is the inside story behind the Salvator Mundi, the most expensive painting ever sold at $450 million. From the moment the painting is bought for $1175 at a shady New Orleans auction house, and the restorer discovers masterful Renaissance brush strokes under the heavy varnish of its cheap restoration, the Salvator Mundi’s fate is determined by an insatiable quest for fame, money and power. As its price soars, so do questions about its authenticity: is this painting really by Leonardo da Vinci?

Unravelling the hidden agendas of the richest men and most powerful art institutions in the world, THE LOST LEONARDO reveals how vested interests in the Salvator Mundi are of such tremendous power that truth becomes secondary.

I went to go see this film to day at my local small theater and I must say it was a very interesting story to watch. They way art in general is debated or appraised amongst the art community can really get ugly sometimes, and this is a very good example of this.

Excellent movie. This painting’s story is a microcosm of exactly what it’s wrong our current so called “educated” human race. The painting isn’t loved for the work of art it is, instead it is loved for the rarity and value in dollars it represents. Basically, the same reason the Kardashians exist, …materialism.

This painting is the biggest rich people problem of recent history next to everyone buying up NFTs.

Controversial and fascinating, acquisition by ego and power rather than a genuine understanding or appreciation of art. Enjoyed the film and it seems that almost all people from those who discovered it to those who restored the painting got something out of it (their own personal experience and money). Its anonymity and mystery keep The Salvatore Mundi interesting.

"And they crucified Him, and divided up His garments among themselves, casting lots for them to decide what each man would take."--Mark 15:24

Everyone wants a piece of Christ, yet, no one cares much about the real Him.

last episode of season 11 of xfiles it says Salvator Mundi instead of Trust no One, I wonder what Chris Carter was trying to say?

They needed something like this so they fabricated it. Those involved don't care if it's authentic or not as long as people keep talking about it, and making documentaries, and writing news articles. Most of its value comes from publicity and buzz and not from its intrinsic properties.

Keep looking up. God does the impossible for those he loves. My vow his promises abide in me, I abide in you. Love at first light

They say it's a Leonardo because the owner & the restorator wanted it to be a Leonardo. They wanted the prestige of owning a Leonardo to be housed in the Louvre Abu Dhabi. If it's a genuine article, where is it now? After $450million, why put it in a secret warehouse.

this particular painting has been floating around for many years. I believe it was made by Bernardino Luini. he was a student of leonardo and never used halos to distinguish between saint and sinner.
Leonardo was an art instructor. there was no paper but lamb skin, which is difficult to draw on so they used a slab of poplar wood. maybe a foot in diameter. give or take an inch. if you look at the salvator mundi(latin for the christ one) you first notice the person is wearing a dress?! in those days women wore hoods, long sleeve, dress that draged on floor and a straight collar so as not to show clevage. long hair dainty hands. no beard. the painting on wood is student size. when the student mastered painting they would go on to paint on large canvas, frescos.murals. etc.If this painting was made by leonardo it would have also had a Halo. christies and sotherbys are crooks.they brought this painting for 1, 000 and paid off all fake authenticators

I'm interested on the restoration process regardless if it's davinci's or not. To have old works that were from the renaissance and still survive for the future is a piece of cultural history indeed.

It looks like a great documentary. The painting is certainly bad enough to be a late painting by Leonardo. His last paintings were definitely sappy like this one.

As an art history major, I watched this movie on the plane and the spotty provenance and the extensive restoration makes me ascertain that “Salvator Mundi” remains allegedly attributed to DaVinci.

Money not well spent.
