Book series that won't be finished.

There's still a chance we might get a Game of Thrones ending, but for these other book series, they will never be finished. (The series talked about are Dune, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Grafton's Alphabet mysteries, Parable of the Sower)

'Z is for Zero' is a fitting title for a book unwritten.

Oh man, getting as far as Y and not being able to finish it is TRAGIC

Im glad with Series like Wheel of Time and Berserk, even with the death of the author, another talanted author was able to step up to finish (or at least continue for Berserk) the serise on a similar quality level

This is why I believe an apprentice should be had by some authors. A young mind that understands the author and their vision and can take up the pen when time comes.

The author of a series called 'Adventurer's Wanted' had a stroke. He survived but does not write anymore saying he doesn't feel the connection to his characters like he used to. That might be more sad, I wish him well.

I was a little surprised when I realized that the popular “write like the wind, George, you’re not getting any younger” comedy song was released _10+_ years ago.

and here i am, waiting for the last book of the kingkiller chronicles, having forgotten the plot of the previous books because it's been so long... wonder if that series will ever get finished

I'm convinced that GRRM will die before finishing ASOIAF. He's just too slow and opened up way to many plotlines to ever come to a satisfying ending.

The one im most familiar with is Wheel of Time, Brandon Sanderson said the last few books had basically been written already thru Robert Jordan's notes so he had a good idea of what his vision was. Not all series were so lucky.

Larson actually had an idea for books four and five of the Dragon tattoo series. Unfortunately, he planned out most of five and a little bit of four, and then he died. Because he was not married his girlfriend lost the rights to the books to his family, who ended up writing the other books in the series.

Apparently Good Omens was meant to be have a sequel, but Neil said he couldn't finish without Terry.
He did also say that S2 was based on the plans they had.

The sad thing is Larsson’s girlfriend insists his fourth novel is sitting on his locked laptop to this day, but due to the nature of his work covering criminal and Nazi activity in Sweden, it can’t be opened without risking exposing his sources

Octavia Butler planned up to four more books in the Parable series, Trickster, Teacher, Chaos, and Clay.

Frank Herbert's son finished the dune series and wrote his last novel in two books based off the notes he left behind.

someone needs to write a murder mystery on how Sue Grafton wrote 25 books trying to subvertly expose an international, across-and-beyond-time scandal and even got to Y and was about to reveal the ultimate secret on book Z but was assassinated before that

This is why, if I ever plan to write a series, I would write down an outline of my plans for it (updating if necessary) and entrust it to a good friend after my death so they could either write it or find someone else who could

That is why I don't always like using cliff hangers as the story ends and actually prefer the "post credits" way of writing. Like if you want a movie that ends on a happy note and are content with the outcome of the characters, you leave the theatre and you'll be fine. If you are hungry for more, well here's a little something something to let you know the world carries on.

I'm very glad that you mentioned Butler, but I wish you'd mentioned Pratchett.

RE: Parable series. Butler planned on writing a trilogy at first, but after writing the first book was too drained, so she combined books 2 and 3. If youve read Talents, its not hard to see why she might have wanted to get to the happy ending after that experience

Okay. This. This is the short that finally caused my fever of procrastination to break. Thank you.
