You + oversimplified = the only reason why I’m doing well in world history

I'm a history teacher in Germany, the fall of the Berlin wall is my favourite moment in recent German history. It's a symbol for perseverance and peace. I also get goosebumps every time I watch the footage with the kids.

Being a European millennial, it's so weird to think about how the status quo we have known for our entire lives is pretty much only as old as we are. A dictatorship in Germany is almost unimaginable today, but the current system is only thirty years old.

Vasili Archipov is my hero. The thing that’s even crazier is that the only reason that boat had required the authorization of a third officer was because Archipov was the chief of that Submarines entire flotilla, any other sub would only have required the approval of the Captain and Political officer to launch the nukes( which this sub had). It was only by sheer luck that Vasili happened to be on this particular sub of the flotilla and thus was able to stop the attack, as due to his presence he was also required to authorize the attack, in addition to the Captain and political officer.

Black background is less distracting, you are enough for the background to be good

As a third worlder, the cold war is like watching your two parents fight knowing that whoever wins they are going to beat the shit out of ya anyways

What’s really interesting about walkergate and Nixon in this bit of history is that there was an all American football athlete and champion ping pong player named Forrest Gump from Alabama. Nixon when awarding Gump for his great ping pong ability, offered him to have a hotel upgrade where it’s rumoured that Gump was the one who actually spotted the cover up and alerted the hotel staff. Pretty crazy right, like something out of a movie

In a YouTube world with reaction videos containing little more commentary than "Wow! That's insane. I didn't know that! Cool stuff." I just gotta say, this channel is an absolute breath of fresh air and I really appreciate the amount of knowledge and perspective you bring to these reactions, your passion for the importance of history, and just the overall presentation. You stop the video SO OFTEN because you always dive deep into the topic filling in the gaps and I really, really appreciate that. Keep up the great work.

This channel is a hidden gem.

I’m a 17 year old student in the US and we definitely learn about Gorbachev in a very positive way. My history teacher told us that they (Regan) were both equal parts of “ending” the Cold War

I feel people always go about their daily lives not caring about how they got here. The amount of luck it took and people who were part of it is so underapreciated .

I remember watching the Wall being torn down live on TV. It hit close to home for me because my German teacher was from Berlin and grew up watching the wall being constructed. The next day at school she was crying and told us she spoke to a cousin for the first time in almost 30 years. It touches my heart to this day.

I was a 9 year old kid, living in what back then was Yugoslavia, and I still remember, vividly, watching the news about the Berlin wall. I didn't really understand all of the implications but I did have a strong feeling of excitement and I knew that it was something huge that had just happened.

Well, not anymore, unfortunately.
Rest in Peace, Gorbachev. I doubt my generation would even exist today if it weren’t for you, and so few of them seem to even care about that.

They didn't really talk about Gorbachev much in school so I had to learn about him outside of it. He seems to be a fairly good leader and was great at easing tensions.

“Gorbachev is still living btw”
well that statement didn’t remain true for long

I remember watching the wall fall on TV. I think the entire nation was glued to the TV for days

When you talk about certain things you could put pictures up in the black bars to help us visualise it

American history teacher: "A lot of americans like Gorbachev"
Me, living in Russia: "Here it's way more complicated. And often people do hate him, older ones at least"
