Saint Patrick & The Hill Of Tara, Ireland 1966

The myths and legends that surround the Hill of Tara and the relationship Saint Patrick had with the area.

The legend goes that on Easter morning in the year 433 Saint Patrick lit the paschal fire at Slane in County Meath in defiance of the order of the High King Lóegaire.

There aren’t a lot of hills in this flat county of Meath which don’t have some association with Saint Patrick

It is said that Saint Patrick came to the Hill of Tara to argue with the King and his druids and to defeat them in acts of magic and piety.

Cathal O’Shannon describes the legend of Saint Patrick and his association with county Meath.

We’ve no actual historical confirmation of this... so we must assume that the Saint came here.

A statue of Saint Patrick, described as “rather shoddy” by Cathal O’Shannon, has been erected on the Hill of Tara under the assumption that the Saint actually visited the site.

Next to the statue of Saint Patrick lies a relic of a more romantic Tara, the Tara of the pagan Irish and their High Kings.

So what is Tara?

It’s a big hill of 500 feet with a wide outlook over the central plain of Ireland. Crowning its ridge is a series of earthworks.

This episode of ‘Newsbeat’ was broadcast on 17 March 1966. The reporter is Cathal O’Shannon.

I just want to say happy Saint Patrick's Day to this channel, and everyone that comes on to comment here. I love this channel so much. It's almost like it reads my mind at times. I intend to spend the rest of the day listening to thin Lizzy and enjoying myself. Be safe everyone, and much love to you all.

What A Man what a mighty man Saint Patrick was, As a young boy he suffered as a slave in the west of Ireland, He escaped and returned years later as a bishop, He did not return with an army to hurt or steal from the people, he only returned to do good, to save souls, to show the people of Ireland the way of the light and the truth, Saint Patrick was Gods special messenger of hope and goodwill. What a might man Saint Patrick was, His teachings and his works will last forevermore

"St. Fiacc does not record the details of what happened at Tara, but this is recorded elsewhere. In 432, Easter coincided with the Druid (pagan) festival. No fire was supposed to be lit but the new lighting of the pagan fire. But St. Patrick lit the Easter fire first. The tradition warned King Laoghaire that if that fire were not stamped out, it would never afterward be extinguished in Erin. The king invited St. Patrick to Tara the next day. St. Patrick was reciting his Breastplate prayer (the "Deer's Cry") on the way from Slane to Tara on Easter Sunday. King Laoghaire had stationed soldiers along the road, expecting to intercept St. Patrick before Tara. The Tripartite Life says, "St. Patrick went with eight young clerics and St. Benen (commemorated November 9th) as a gillie with them, and St. Patrick gave them his blessing before they set out. A cloak of darkness went over them so that not a man of them appeared. Howbeit, the enemy who were waiting to ambush them, saw eight deer going past them, and behind them a fawn with a bundle on its back. That was St. Patrick with his eight, and St. Benen behind them with his tablets on his back."

Cathal had a brilliant programme on RTE in his later years. It was about famous murders that had happened in the past in Ireland. It used to be brilliant, I can't remember the name of it. There was a great episode about Malcolm MacArther. Does anyone remember this series?
