My brothers m1 mac also has the exaxt same damage. Insane that this is such a widespread problem. You would think apple would have found this error during testing.

The old macbook pro (2015) I have has been:
- dropped multiple time (screen open, closed and on hard surfaces etc)
- had many items between it and screen at closing
- been slammed shut
- had heavy stuff on top of it (not on purpose)
- been closed from all different sides
- has had lot of pressure direct on screen
- multiple liquid spills
- thrown around room
- tossed in bag with various items..

BUT NOT A SINGLE ISSUE!

This new lineup of laptops sounds like a really bad product if they are that sensitive.
The whole point of the "one piece aluminum body" was the durability compared to all the plastic

Not buying upgrade until these M1/2s have been resolved.

AppleCare+ 99$ annually, +99$ service fee for each screen repair. In 5 years without any repairs 500$ spent for nothing. And with the screen being so fragile, because of the crazy thin lip/gap, Apple did the math, and they certainly will be profiting from this, either way. Cool.

Hi Scott, I faced the exact same issue with my Apple device. Initially, I took it to an Apple Authorized Reseller, and they sent a report to Apple. However, even though it was just a microscopic crack that they detected using a digital microscope, after a month of discussions, they declined to repair it under warranty. The cost estimate was approximately $900 for my M1 16-inch 2021 model. Interestingly, I decided to visit another Apple store, and they were able to fix it for free under warranty.

Same out of nowhere flicker & crack situation happened to me. I used my M1 Macbook Air very infrequently as i have a Mac mini as my main work horse. I kept the M1 Macbook Air in my my backpack with an insulated computer slot compartment, primarily using it when traveling. I discovered the flickering (and ultimately cracked) one day when i pulled it out during a flight. I've never used any kind of keyboard cover, nor have i ever put anything between the keyboard and display. The body of the laptop is in pristine condition. Looks brand new. I brought it to apple, and I was talked down to like a child as if I caused the problem. They accused me of leaving a piece of paper in between the display and keyboard, and that's what caused it. If that were true - which it is not - then, why is this display being used??? Seriously - A piece of paper can cause $700 damage to a laptop less 2 years old?!? My still functioning 2012 macbook lasted til i replaced it with the 2020 M1 macbook air. The 2012 Macbook exterior looks like it's been through 2 tours of duty, and it's slow as hell - but the display has no flickering or cracks! Apple quoted me $700 to repair the Air. I've been a loyal Apple fan since my first PowerPC in 1997. I understand that sometimes there are accidents and the consumers are at fault. But with so many echoing the same thing, it's insane they are still trying to blame the consumer. Apple's continued gaslighting response to this is appaling.

I went to the store today, after speaking with someone online, with the SAME ISSUE. I did nothing to it to cause damage. I was told BY THE APPLE STORE EMPLOYEE that a crumb could cause the damage. Not covered at all under their warranty nor Apple care. I’m disgusted. $577 to replace the screen on a brand new MacBook, purchased four months and three days ago…..c’mon Apple, ya gotta do better!

I'm literally terrorized by this info. I just bought a M2 yesterday and I just noticed that (1) several people has this same problem, (2) that nobody has a clue about what causes it, and worst of all, (3) that Apple simply does not help customers to fix it. I haven't unboxed it, and now I really want to get it back. I will never buy an Apple product again.

The "lip" of the Macbook Pro M1-M2 series laptops is madly thin. It is not even summer (when the presence of sand increases significantly), and somehow, a dust grain, salt or something else tiny and hard has left a tiny dent in the screen. Beware! Keyboard has to be wiped from any and all dust before closing, like crazy. This move from Apple to make the laptop's "lip" and gap between KB/Body of the laptop so slim, undermines the security of and possibly longevity of the screen and the entire laptop. Stupidly genious decision. Bravo Apple, it's certainly better than any other kind of planned obsolescence, but still...

The same thing happened to me. I have only had mines for 7 months. I worked on mines late one night because I was preparing for a presentation I had to do the next day. The next morning my screen was messed up. I asked my 19 year old son did he try to use my laptop in the middle of the night. He no not at all. I was baffled on how it mysteriously was damaged while I was sleep. I was quoted $487 to repair and that didn’t include labor. I am highly frustrated because a MacBook is not a cheap investment! This should at least be covered under the warranty!

This just happened to me. Legitimately confused, I searched for what could cause my screen to crack for no reason and found 100's if not 1000's of reviews that confirmed the same defect. I contacted customer service but it doesn't seem like they are admitting a manufacturing flaw and most customers paid to repair it only for the issue to happen again. I hope they will correct this.

My 2019 just broke from a very light touch from my finger, trying to clean a smudge. I'm going to attempt to replace the screen myself using an eBay replacement. You just have to make sure to get the right screen, since they changed screen models 3 times in less than 3 years. In the case of the 2019 change over, the same model number is shared between MacBooks that use two different screens.

Scott you are too forgiving of Apple. They are producing an extremely fragile product, and not mentioning how fragile it actually is. With all the complaints, they are doing nothing to fix the issues, just blaming it on the users. It's just so wrong. When it it breaks they say tough luck sucker! I'm an everyday user, I take care of expensive items and yet my M1 screen broke 3 times in 1 year and my brand new $1, 600.00 M2 cracked within the first month! I still have MacBooks from 2013 and 2017 that have never had any issues. Apple is not taking responsibility for this defect in design, they claimed crumbs on the keyboard caused the screen to crack. Crumbs! How's that? I keep the keyboard clean with a laptop brush I bought on Amazon. The worst part as you mentioned is Apple won't cover the repair and it will cost you almost as much as a new Mac, which is why I stupidly bought the M2 thinking they would have corrected the problems but they didn't... and they are well aware of the issues. I'm pissed, I like my Apple products but not so much that I'd let them rip me off again. They expect you to buy Apple Care to cover for Apples poor design issues? No, just no!

This is so frustrating, it happened to my 1 month of use M1 mac book pro (2021) wich i bought brand new on february 2022 and take really good care of. I finished working i cleaned it, close it, and next morning it had horizontal and vertical lines on left bottom corner. At apple store they said exactly the same as they said to you, even so that the hard case from incase could be as heavy to pressure point breake the LCD, come on! ... To change the LCD they charge $850 and if i try an trade in they give me $200, this is crazy!. Since then i just use it as clam shell as there isn't any other option and paying its not one of them right now. I know this mac book pro M1 generation screen is faulty because it happens to a LOT of customers like us.

My M1 MBA also has a cracked screen. Mine is at the top center of the screen near the camera as if too much pressure was used when opening or something.

my 2019 16 base model did this 4 weeks ago. Taken care like my own baby. Now the screen's dead. Still have fully functioning 2010 mbpro. They sure do don't make things like they used to

Same happened to me today. The question is what are we going to do about it?

seems like the screen saver on sonoma is causing this issue, even a repair guy on apple forums confirmed that the screen was heating up in the bottom left corner (where the screen cracks) for sure causing this issue.
