Henrico County is partnering with Henrico County Public Schools and the nonprofit organization Capital Trees to develop and implement a reforestation program, which will expand and strengthen tree canopies at county park and school sites. Officials announced the initiative May 9 at Deep Run Park - one of four sites selected for the program's initial phase.

Henrico Chief of Staff Cari Tretina said the partnership "will mean more trees in our parks and more trees in our schools. It also will mean healthier, more vibrant forests and wooded areas on land that the county controls."

Supervisor Tommy Branin, whose Three Chopt District includes Deep Run Park, said the partnership shows the county in action. "What you see today is a perfect example of what we do," he said. "We sit. We talk. We figure it out. We bring citizens in to give their input, and we start moving forward."

The first plantings under the program are expected in fall 2023.
