I Bought a $6 PCIe x16 Riser Cable For GAMING.... Was it a MISTAKE?

I bought the cheapest PCIe Riser cable off amazon for $6... and it didn't even say what exact spec it was... It looked like it was x16, and upon booting it up it recognised it as PCIe 3.0. However what we drop it down to PCIe 2.0 x4? Will it stutter or drop performance in games like Fortnite and Apex Legends? Let's find out.

I had one of those too and I got a couple crashes at first. I read about how much expensive riser cables focus their marketing on their good shielding.
So I wrapped the cheap riser in aluminium tape and it actually totally helped.

I'm really loving these series of videos from Japan, Bryan. You look much happier and relaxed. I had a question about the CR 5 56 you are using now. Is there anything special you look for when selecting these water dispersants? For example I've been told WD 40 can create a sort of residue over time. Have you seen something similar over long periods. Also, are you using break cleaner for the initial clean because you don't have the ultrasonic cleaner with you.

I was working for computer repair shop, and we had a lot of miners com with this type of riser cables back when people were minning with r9 280s and r9 290s . The cables worked just fine, only problems with them were quality control, bad soder joints etc. But you can check for that before using it. I remember that some of the r9 290x's used more than 75W from the PCI slot, and the cables handled it just fine.

The riser gives me flash backs for when we had IDE cables in our PC's. Never again.

I have used these cheap PCIe extensions for years and never had a single issue, but I only ever used them in lower end GPU small form factor builds.

Sprayed a riser like this black and probably spent more in time and paint over just buying a black one. Worked fine at 16x in a z97 board and looked good.

That riser grey cable reminds me of the old IDE cables used in PC builds of the late 90s

In my experience with a Gigabyte 2060 Super Windforce OC (2 slot thick, 3 fans):

+ Looks better vs original orientation.
+ Doesn't heat up M.2 drive on second slot of mobo

- GPU core runs a bit hotter (3-5°C in my case)
- Thermal pad oil leakage may occur after some time.

So after 2 years of having my card vertically, it starts to leak oil. I took the card apart to check and the oil came from the thermal pads. They are still in good condition and moist, not dried so still usable. But because I don't want a mess in my PC, I put the card back in horizontal position and no more leak. So imo if your card has cheap pads, keep it in horizontal position for cooler temp and no worries of leakage.

Perfekt, with that cable you can install a fullsizecard outside a small form factor computer and just connect an extra PSU, anway it would be fun if you tested a BEAST riser in a laptop and connect both with USB and min pci-e. Thanx and greetings from Sweden.

Most trippy thing about this channel is watching it tired and seeing the prices. I'm from the UK and when i see Australian dollars or the Yen i flip out thinking whow that's expensive. Reality is often different ofc, its normally costing more here due to taxes and stuff (although lately it seems we are roughly in the same ball park)

Been using these for sometime now, I like to connect my gpus outside my cases for fresh air purposes. Cut a slit in the case and feed it through. They do say on them bitcoin and another called Litcoin or something.

I've been running a vert-mount on my 2070S for several years now and I can tell you that a riser-cable is NOT the place to cheap-out, I had crashes and shut-downs on cheaper cables with performance drops too. Several AMD cards I tried with a cheaper cable would have a fit and not run games at all. After experimenting a while I broke-down and bought a known-brand riser cable and have not had a single issue in any of the 3 gaming rigs my 2 daughters and I have running.

Dollar Tree has “ specialty duck tape “ of all colors. You could wrap it with that or some cheap carbon fiber vinyl for just a few bucks and have a decent looking riser cable. I did that for 1 build and the vinyl turned out great.

Had couple of those messing signal on pcie 3. They had poor soldering and some of signal lines were shorting or not connected at all.
If mobo and gpu handshake on pcie 4.0 those cables keep messing up signal and you can't even go to bios to change without plugging gpu on mobo. I had premium pcie 3 cable and it kept preventing boot every time after updating bios. Kinda nasty when making hard tube watercooling. Even on pcie 3.0 with 5950X it had stuttering in game and required me to raise io voltage on cpu a little.
Buying that 90$ pcie 4.0 cable made life easy and Louge one might do pcie 5.0 too. So high quality on that one.

I got a similar cable several years ago from Newegg. However, mine also has a four-pin Molex connector for extra voltage . I was going to uae it in a Lenovo computer that you could only install a single slot video card in . Was going to side mount the video card, but I ended up putting a pci video card in instead...

I've seen posts few years back that riser needs to be putted lower port for compability issues, that it uses lower X8, x4. Maybe those cables have improved really good

0:48 I feel it would look better in black, EZ DIY FAB sells one for about $19 that is all black and would look better, but maybe later on you'll hit it with some spray paint, I am just getting started watching...
