When I was younger I was trained Royal but I stopped dancing for about 15yrs and now I'm back at it as an adult and the school I dance at teaches Balanchine and it was very different from what I was used to. I will say that now that I have adapted to his style of dancing I absolutely love it.

Raised in Vaganova, eventually I had a Balanchine teacher who kept yelling at us, "Separate your fingers! Separate your fingers!" Problem is, it became habit and it's hard to return to the more "streamlined" hand.

No way can I accept the separated clawlike hands beautiful. It seems like Balanchine (raised in the Russian tradition, btw), when creating his own school, decided to just be different from the standards, no matter what. Russians use long hands? Ok, mine will be separated! Looks ugly? Does not matter, I'm a boss here. Marina Semyonova, the Vaganova's favourite student, said that the hand gesture should be neither too narrow, nor too thin, it should be as though you've taken your hand out of the water and the water is dripping from the tips of your fingers.
