Anthony Burgess (1917-1993) reads chapters 1, 2 and 4 of his classic and controversial novel "A Clockwork Orange", originally released by Caedmon in 1973. The audio comes from a 1996 cassette reissue. Very interesting to hear it read by the author himself, although just the opening chapters of it...I wish he'd recorded the entire thing. Still, an interesting artifact for fans of both the book and the film.

Chapter One: 0:00
Chapter Two: 19:25
Chapter Four: 38:53

For chapters 8 & 9, also read by Burgess, check this out:

Burgess always had northern (UK) accents in mind for the droogs. Great to hear it read as the author wished.

Burgess reading this himself is a treat... and terrifying. You really get the sense of a much older Alex looking back on his youth with way too much pleasure. It's like the old fart at the bar starts talking and you find out he used to be in the Klan.

There’s no way the entire novel is just under one hour. Wow!

I have to say this. Anthony Burgess comes across as a kind of Northern Stanley Unwin. The film is not so pleasant however. Very tragic, very violent and very sad.
