Perhaps the backlash against funk's step child was inevitable, but did disco really suck? No! Especially not for guitar players. In this lesson we will breakdown some cool guitar parts from the much maligned, but still very funky genre of music, and I'll explain what you should take away from each example.

While I always try my best to refrain from comparing people, as to who is better than the next and recognizing that different guitar teachers have their own teaching approaches, methods and areas of specialties and areas that they are great in... But... If I were forced to give an answer as to who the Best Guitar Teacher is on planet earth (and there are lots of super great guitar teachers on youtube), I honestly and sincerely am obliged to say, that Title without a doubt Belongs to you... Totally Grateful!!

In all the cover bands I was in, we always had a disco medley in our set list. Save it for when everybody's been drinking and watch that dance floor get packed. Always great guitar and bass parts in those songs.

No real guitar player should ever feel guilty about disco. That shit takes real knowledge and skill.

Never noticed how much your right hand has adopted a ‘George Benson’
Position. That is the axis of the hand horizontal and Below most of the strings. Very difficult for most of us mortals. But sets the hand up for very smooth rapid picking. I tried for weeks and just gave up. Few videos on YouTube on this. Great stuff. Thanks. Shally

Thanks Rick, I've saved this video in a secret playlist, I don't want anyone to know that I'm watching Disco related videos!

This is awesome, especially the “what can I learn from this?” part.

I remember in the late 70s when I was supposed to be a heavy metal fan I secretly really liked Chic. I didn’t come out about this to me friends until about 2005.

Many of us loved reggae, African music, dub and disco — often it was simply r&b that was made for dancing.

I think that your example "Got to be real" isn't really disco, but goes more in direction to R'n'B/ Funk. Even it's from 1978 for me it sounds more like 1980 or 1981.
But today the genre "disco" is a very wide term.
e.g. in Europe the word "disco" was used until the mid' 80s, but in the US "disco" was already over after 1979.
But it took some decades till the term "disco" came back into these days (2022)

Always remember when Karen Carpenter broke away from her dominating composer brother to do some of her own thing. He warned her to any form of music except disco. She gave him the middle finger and made a disco record.
