The Selkie Bride is an Icelandic folktale. However, in the original tale, the mother found the seal skin on her own when she found the key to the chest and then went back to the ocean, never to return.

I remember a similar story in Korea but instead of a selkie’s fur, it was an angel’s robes (they can’t go to heaven without them because their robes allowed them to fly).

The Inu people have a similar legend too. I read it in the book "woman who run with the wolfs". It is very insightful 😊

While selkies aren't all well popularized, I do believe in the show Sirens the whole skin-shedding to human form in based off of them, and Naiads in Grimm since they have webbed hands and feet and produced children with humans. Most selkies r women but very few r men. Male selkies are described as being very handsome in their human form, and having great seductive powers over human women. They typically seek those who are dissatisfied with their life, such as married women waiting for their fishermen husbands. If she wishes to make contact with a selkie male, she must shed seven tears into the sea. The popular tattletale version about a certain "Ursilla" of Orkney (a pseudonym) tells it.

OK, I understand that the fisherman genuiely loved her. But still, hiding her skin from her to make sure she would stay with him... That's kinda weird. And cruel.

I learnt about Selkies on Hallmark channel as a young girl of 8yrs old while watching the “ The Legend of Roan Irish “ . One of my fave Irish movies of all time . Highly recommend it . Such fascinating folklores the Irish & Scottish have ❤️🥰

The first time I learned about Selkies was a character in a kid's book called The Secret Country by Jane Johnson. I've been trying to remember the name of this book for years. Finally, I searched up "selkies in modern media" and I was able to find it 😅 took me forever, just to assuage my childhood memories.

I've heard that same story this way;the fisherman enchanted the selkie after encountering her several times, and convinced her to marry him and after she married him, he tricked her and hid the skin.

The sea is always been very mysterious, and in the Celtic myths many Shapeshifting creatures live there either benign or evil. Selkies are often some of the most mysterious and intriguing creatures. Mind you down here in Cornwall we mostly have legends of mermaids rather than Selkies, despite having alarge seal population LOL.

Silkies are NOT always female. There is a well known Scottish song, 'The grey silkie of Sul Skerry'. In it, the selkie has a son with a human woman, and comes to her on land to fetch him when he was 10, and paid her for the service. They are also known in Wales, where they are called Selech, and New England, where they are just known as seals.
