You got a few things wrong with the Essential phone.
The accent changes, either to dark or light (depending on wallpaper if you toggle the setting).
The notch settings were removed not by Essential but by Google. They waited until this month to bring it back.
Split screen mode can be activated on Essential. You press the app icon when in overview.
I would prefer more settings or customisations on the Essential just like Oxygen OS, but they keep it stock for a reason. And updates are sent out at the same time, if not faster, than the Pixels.

Am using the essential phone and there is no lag when scrolling for me it’s very smooth.the batter life on Android pie is a big improvement for me am getting like 6 hours + screen on time I can go 24 hours on a single charge. the camera is not that good in low light but in good lighting conditions it very good. The speaker is loud .The screen quality is good .

If you want to do split screen or see app info, you need to press the application icon on the top of each page while you're moving in between app tabs. You said there was no options, I just wanted to point that out.

not lags on PH-1. or may be I not see anything ))) about apps scroll - you must push to icon of app and you see the menu of app (info, split). different between phones in hard. soft are similar.
