Im pretty sure this is talking about snape and lily not james and lily.  The part about being the strongest memory is talking about how even though lily is dead she is still snape's fondest memory (his patronus is the doe, her memory fuels it)

I think this song is all about how the men of HP see Lily. Harry's strongest memory is his parents (from POA), Snape loves her, and whenever he closes his eyes he sees her, James is with her 'you are so ruthless, let me pursue this, you come around, and I fall in love'. It's basically about how Lily is great and they all love her.

i think this is snape singing to lily because snape is the only death eater that is able to perform a full and strong patronus. That is due to the memory of lily.
