There is a brainless way to calculate the characteristic of a logarithm. If the argument is equal or greater than the base, multiple divisions of the argument by the base will give you the powers of the base in the argument, which is the characteristic. If the argument is less than the base, log a base b is equal to 1 divided by log b base a. In this way, calculating a logarithm like log Pi base e is simple division. You can tell that the characteristic is 1 almost immediately. The mantissa is not much harder, really!
